Are You Rental-Ready?

Your car is headed to the shop after a crash. Will your auto insurance pay for a rental car? Make sure you’re covered by following these three simple steps.

Rule 1: Evaluate your rental needs

Do you have car rental coverage? If so, do you have enough? Situations and needs change. A couple who signed up for car rental coverage years ago may now have three kids—and need to rent a minivan if they have an accident. It’s wise to make sure your coverage will reimburse you for renting the kind of car you’re currently driving.

Rule 2: Don’t skip coverage

Because it’s optional, not everyone chooses to add car rental coverage to their auto insurance. But the additional cost to your premiums is small compared to what you’d pay for days or weeks of a rental car while yours is being repaired. Spending a few dollars on insurance premiums now could save hundreds of dollars in car rental fees later.

Rule 3: Choose the right amount

Car rental coverage reimburses based on the daily limit you choose. If your daily limit is less than the daily rate of your rental car, you’ll have to pay the difference. If you’ve chosen the lowest limit (say, $25 per day), it might cover the cost of renting a subcompact car—but may only cover a fraction of renting the minivan or larger car you need.
