7 Insider Tips for Your Venice Getaway

The mouthwatering food, exquisite views—there are many reasons to visit Venice. Here’s where to start.


Venice is consistently named one of the world’s most romantic destinations. The city’s labyrinth of medieval alleys and canals—spread across 117 islands—beguiles the senses. With its enchanting decadence and jaw-dropping sights, Venice is a wonderland without equal. Here, insider tips to make the most of this exquisite city.


  1. For an overview of the city’s delights, take a vaporetto (water bus) along the Grand Canal, then cross the Rialto Bridge into market stalls filled with merchants hawking everything from fresh squid to carnival masks.


  1. Those who venture into Venice’s back streets will find jewel-box churches, many of which, like the Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, hold only-in-Italy surprises—don’t be shocked to see a Bellini or Titian on the wall.


  1. If you’re a seafaring type, consider a jaunt into the Venetian lagoon to one of the outlying isles such as Murano, the center of Venetian glass making since the Middle Ages.


  1. Release your inner romantic with the quintessential Venetian experience: a sunset gondola tour. Only hire gondolas that are painted black, the official color for licensed craft, and agree on price and duration beforehand. Typical rates are 80 euros for 40 minutes (or 100 euros after 7 p.m.).


  1. Consider visiting between late October and early April, when the city is quieter, cooler and less crowded, but be prepared to wade through acqua alta, floodwater, which is more common in the early spring and late fall. (Because the city was founded on low-lying marshland, periodic flooding has been a fact of life in Venice since time immemorial.)


  1. The often-unnamed Venetian streets are notoriously tricky to navigate; it can be an adventure to explore on your own, or let a guide show you the way.
