Apple Pie Takes Top Prize...Whoopi Casts Deciding Vote
Over 2,500 suggestions were made in the online Community (many postings had several flavor suggestions). Some flavors were traditional—peanut butter, cheesecake and blueberry. Others were not only unique, but a little surprising. We had suggestions for hot dog, tofu, grilled onions and broccoli (they may have been confused with the deli contest held next door!)
Acclaimed chocolatier and owner William Brown spent days combing through the many scrumptious-sounding and inventive suggestions with his team. They actually prepared a number of samples to determine if they could capture the essence of the flavor suggested. In the end, they narrowed it down to 10 finalists.
Judging was held at Datz Deli in Tampa, FL., who hosted an elite group of judges and guests. The judges included (among others): Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg (via phone); Chris Ponte, renowned chef & owner of Café Ponte; Veronica Cintron, Bay New 9 Anchor, Preston Rudie, WTSP reporter; Holly Tomlin, Owner/President, Tomlin Staffing; Dean Darby Dickerson, Stetson College of Law; Chef Heather, Datz Deli; and me—to represent Going Places—and to eat a bunch of chocolate.
Each judge and guest were given a plate of the 10 flavors—simply decorated—so as now to sway votes based on appearance. When the votes came in, it was a three-way tie between Apple Pie, Creamsicle and Lemon Basil.
Now, it was time for Whoopi to weigh in with her secret ballot, which was cast just prior to the event. She had comments on each flavor, but she was ecstatic about one.
“Apple Pie. My number one! FAVORITE. Before I put this in my mouth I said ‘Nobody can do apple pie. Not in gum, not in candy and certainly not chocolate’. You blew us away.” Whoopi Goldberg
Congratulations to June Tray of Port Richey and Lisa Zlotziver of Fort Lauderdale, FL. They both suggested Apple Pie (Lisa added a cinnamon twist, while June's was a great "All American". They both have received a $250 gift card, to be used for a 100+ piece assortment of chocolates - or a variety of cholates.
We apologize that we incorrectly named Lisa as the official winner. Bill from WD chose and began testing the "Cinnamon Apple Pie" flavor and this was the working name of the new chocolate. When he began finalizing the list of choices and names, he opted for just "Apple Pie"...when this happened, we should have gone back and checked to see whether there was someone with just Apple Pie, but unfortunatley, didn't realize there was another apple pie suggestion made prior to Lisa's. I apolgoize for the confusion. We have awarded both the top prize. Thanks to everyone for entering!
All nine semi-finalists will each receive a 20-piece box.
The semi-finalists were: 1) Creamsicle 2) Gingerbread 3) Lemon & Basil 4) Mojito 5) Burnt Sugar & Bourbon 6) Guava & Banana 7) Mango & Mint 8) Cardamom & Pistachio 9) Hot Chocolate & Marshmallow
Thanks to everyone for entering. It was a great contest!

There is an ice cream flavor made by Eddy's, I think. It is called French Silk and is to simply die for. Buy a container and try the flavor. Candy like that would be so fantastic.
Try it, you'll like it
