Buckling up your pets can save their lives, too. Watch this video to learn how to travel by car safely with your furry friends.

When you’re preparing for a road trip, you likely will have a packing list. Car seat, toothbrush, dog leash? Check. Next, you might make sure everyone is buckled up and ready to go.

But there’s something you may have forgotten. Your pet needs to be buckled up, too. Many people don’t think about securing their dogs in the car—in fact, 39 percent of people said they never even considered it, according to a survey sponsored by AAA and Kurgo Pet Products. But driving with an unsecured dog is dangerous.

In the same survey, 52 percent of respondents admitted to petting their dog while driving—which can be distracting. Looking away from the road for only two seconds doubles your risk of being in a crash, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

There are steps you can take to ensure a safe ride for everyone.

  • Get a pet restraint system that restricts your pet’s movements and uses seat belts. Padded harnesses with sturdy connectors and straps can connect to a car’s seat belt or LATCH system.
  • Put your pet in a hard- or soft-sided crate in your car. The crate should always be strapped down. You also can use pet car seats or basket-style holders for smaller dogs.
  • There are several types of barrier systems, such as a wired partition, that will fit your car. These decrease distractions but don’t offer protection.

And for peace of mind, in many states AAA Insurance offers Pet Protection Coverage as part of Collision Coverage for your pet dog or cat. If your pet is injured or killed as a result of a car accident, AAA provides coverage for them.

The next time you plan a road trip, keep your dog in mind as you make your packing list. Planning in advance can help protect you, your passengers and your pup.
